NANDIGRAM: The charred body of a child was found on Sunday at Bhangabera near Nandigram by members of a Trinamool Congress-backed body that is spearheading protests against the acquisition of land for industry in West Bengal.

A core committee member of the Bhumi Uchhed Pratirodh Committee (BUPC), Sabuj Pradhan, said its members had found the charred body while digging up land under the Bhangabera bridge in search of bodies of victims of the police firing on March 14.

According to East Midnapore’s Superintendent of Police P G Srinivas, the BUPC activists had handed over the body to police, who sent it for a medical examination at a hospital in the district headquarters at Tamluk.

Earlier, the BUPC, comprising members of the Trinamool Congress, Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised a large procession to demand the “punishment” of chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for the police firing.

The procession, including women and children dispersed on seeing a large posse of policemen. Later, they began digging  a large area under the Bhangabera bridge even as a huge police contingent monitored the situation.
