SRINAGAR: Terror revisited Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday night after militants massacred five Hindu labourers and injured four others at Mathiyana-Panglar, a remote village in Jammu’s Rajouri district.

Inspector General of Police, Jammu range, SP Vaid said heavily-guarded militants dressed in camouflage fatigues barged into the shanties where the labourers were housed last night.

“They sprayed bullets indiscriminately killing five of them on the spot and injured four others. Two of the labourers, however, managed to escape in the darkness and reported the matter to the security forces,” he said.

The dead have been identified as Sanjay Kumar, Chaman Lal, Mohinder Kumar, Baldev Raj and Reshpal Singh. Three of the injured have been identified as Subhash Chander, Babu Ram and Raj Kumar. All the four injured were airlifted to the Military hospital in Jammu on Friday morning.

According to police, the labourers were involved in the road construction work at Rajouri and had been camping in tin hutments. There was no guard on duty as the area was believed to be a safe location. The nearest picket is about one kilometer from the scene of crime, Army sources said. “Before the attack, the militants had rounded up locals for information,” said Colonel SD Goswami, the defence spokesman at Jammu.

A massive combing operation has been launched to hunt down the militants, he added.
