MUMBAI: The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Mumbai University to set up the Centre for Excellence of Basic Science.

A five-year integrated MSc course will be offered to 30 students at the facility from the next academic year for which an all-India entrance exam will be conducted. The students will be exempted from fee and will get free accommodation.

The Rs 51.5 crore project is funded for first five years by the DAE. Its funds include construction of building, hostel and other infrastructures.

The MOU was signed by Vice-chancellor of University of Mumbai Vijay Khole and Secretary, DAE, Anil Kakodkar at a function here.

The new centre will have a Board of governors, including the directors of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Vice-chancellor of University of Mumbai and few faculty members.

"The course will have both sound basic sciences as well as experience on practicals including building instruments and facility building," Khole said.

Both DAE and the university expect to have greater interaction between students and the faculty in the new centre and the students will also be given opportunity to learn few foreign languages and fine arts for an overall development, he announced.

Speaking on the occasion, Kakodkar said, "We are embarking on great idea which will make a difference in the field of education and research".

Kakodkar said that it was necessary for the faculty to create an ambience at the new facility for the students to empower them.

The Centre's approach should be multi-disciplinary or holistic and the students should be given training to borderless science and the connectivity between various faculty, he opined.

BARC director S Banerjee said with the setting up of this centre, "We will reinforce the linkages between the University of Mumbai and DAE and an opportunity for fresh options for advanced sciences."

The design of the courses will start with physics, biology, chemistry, math and computer applications, he said.

This venture will give an opportunity for the students to learn from the scientists' experience and this interface will be in diverse areas, he added.
