Mahajan treatment cost Rs 32 lakh, only half paid to hospital

MUMBAI: The treatment of slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan at the PD Hinduja Hospital here cost Rs 32 lakh but the Central government has so far paid only half this amount.

If the remaining amount is not cleared by March 31, the charity commissioner may question the hospital's authorities, a hospital source said on Friday. Hinduja Hospital comes under the purview of the charity commissioner because it is a philanthropic institution.

"The total cost for treating Mahajan was Rs 32 lakh. The hospital has received Rs 16 lakh recently," the source said.

The amount was only the cost of medical equipment as doctors had waived their fees, the source said.

As Mahajan was a member of the Rajya Sabha when he was admitted to the hospital, the cost of his treatment will have to be borne by the Central government.

Mahajan died of multiple organ failure at the hospital on April 22 last year, 12 days after he was allegedly shot by his younger brother Pravin.
