NEW DELHI: A Kenya-based NRI businessman was arrested for allegedly defrauding a Ghaziabad trader on the pretext of importing aluminium ignots from Nigeria.

Manish Gupta, the NRI businessman, was arrested at the IGI Airport on March 15 soon after his arrival from Kenya, police said on Wednesday.

During interrogation, Gupta admitted to have prepared the bogus export documents in collusion with Rajeev Aggarwal, one of the directors of his firm Doncapo Afroasia and sending the almost empty containers to Delhi.

Ghaziabad-based importer Pradeep Kumar Garg had ordered a large quantity of aluminium ignots from Gupta's firm Doncapo Afroasia in 2004. When the order was despatched to Delhi, Garg found that Gupta and Aggarwal had despatched just five per cent of the order and cheated him to the tune of Rs 1.25 crore.

Gupta was produced before a local court which sent him to four days of police custody. Aggarwal, the other accused, is still absconding.
