MUMBAI: Sex education in schools is under attack. Based on the premise that sex education will lead more children to experiment with sex instead of staying off it, the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) will launch a countrywide agitation to have it scrapped.

The Jamaat will seek the help of Parents and Teachers Associations to plug any move to introduce sex education. In Mumbai, the JIH will take the help of city-based anti-obscenity crusader Pratibha Naitthani. It is also in touch with 22 other organisations under the aegis of the Ashleelta Virodhi Manch (Anti-Obscenity Campaign) to back their stand.

Jamaat representatives met Minister for School Education Vasant Purke and demanded that the state government reconsider its decision to make sex education compulsory in schools. A memorandum will also be submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh. The organisation plans to intensify protests across the country by mobilising Muslims organisations.

The provocation seems to have come from Arjun Singh, who indicated that sex education will be crucial to prevent AIDS. A spokesman for the Jamaat, Aslam Ghazi, told DNA that his organisation will not let the HRD ministry carry on with its plans. “Uncontrolled sexual anarchy is the reason for AIDS,” he said. “It is a Western illness. Why should our children be taught about sex?”

According to Ghazi, sex education will do no good because it will leave children confused and curious. “On the one hand, schools will teach children everything about sex. On the other, they will caution them against indulging in sex,“ he remarked. “When they are asked to hold off, they will become more curious and try to experiment with many partners. We will not allow such moral corruption.”
