MUMBAI: The Congress and NCP, partners in the state government in Maharashtra, on Monday appeared to be leading the tally in zilla parishad and panchayat samiti elections.

The exact picture would be available only on Tuesday as counting was still in progress at some places, State Election Commissioner Nand Lal said.

Police fired in the air at Kej in Beed district after a violent crowd pelted stones at a counting centre. The situation was now under control, police said.

Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Revenue minister Narayan Rane, leader of opposition Ramdas Kadam and BJP general secretary Gopinath Munde succeeded in retaining hold over their respective constituencies.

In Latur zilla parishad, Deshmukh's home district, of the total 58 seats, 31 have gone to Congress while 18 have been bagged by BJP. NCP and Shiv Sena claimed five and four seats.

In Sindhudurg, Rane's home turf, of the 50 zilla parishad seats, Congress has bagged 41, NCP has secured six, BJP two and Sena one.

Sena is leading in Ratnagiri ZP polls. The elections were crucial for Kadam, who belongs to the district.

In Beed, Munde's home district, BJP-Sena has secured a clear majority by bagging 31 of the total 60 seats.

Elections for 1,647 seats of 27 zilla parishads and 3,294 seats of 310 panchayat samitis were held on Sunday.

The NCP captured the Pune zilla parishad with a clear majority bagging 45 seats in the 75-member house.

With the NCP victory, the district guardian minister Ajit Pawar has maintained his supremacy in the region even as Congress continued its poor show with a tally of just 13 seats.

The Shiv Sena got 6 seats followed by BJP (2), Janata Dal (S) 2 and 7 independents.

The NCP had emerged as the single largest party in the hung 144-member house of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in the last month's civic elections, giving a jolt to Congress. The party has also won a majority in the neighbouring Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

In Nashik, the NCP has won seven ZP seats, the Congress six, while the Shiv Sena-BJP combine bagged six seats out of the 25 results declared in the district.

The Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) is leading in Raigad having bagged 21 out of 62 ZP seats and 26 out of 124 panchayat samiti seats, as per the results declared so far.

CPM has won four seats, while Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Nasik Zilla Vikas Aghadi have bagged one seat each in the 74-member ZP, according to official sources.
