MUMBAI: A robber claiming to be a Pakistani national has been arrested on charges of dacoity here, police said on Saturday.

"We arrested Abdul Rauf Memon (44), a known robber involved in at least four-five recent instances of dacoity and chain snatching from Borivili in northwest Mumbai on Thursday," Deputy Commissioner of Police Makrand Ranade said.

During his interrogation, Memon, who lives in a slum in south Mumbai's Colaba, claimed he is a Pakistani national and had been staying in India since 1989. He also said he had over 30 offences registered against him in Karachi.

Memon was earlier arrested in connection with two different robbery cases filed at Dindoshi and Oshiwara police
stations.

"We are verifying this as he does not have documents on him that would establish his claims. We are also in touch with various agencies including the Anti-Terrorism Squad," he said.

Police seized a country-made revolver and a few bullets from Memon's possession.

He was remanded to police custody till March 17 by a court here.

Meanwhile, police in Borivili also arrested a 22-year-old alleged robber named Dineshkumar Pande in a separate operation and seized a country-made revolver and a bullet from him, Ranade said.
