Kerala film festival in US

WASHINGTON: A Kerala Film Festival got underway on Friday with the screening of noted director Adoor Gopalakrishnan's masterpiece depicting the life and times of famed Kathakali dancer Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair.

In person for the event at the 'Freer and Sackler Gallery' will be Sukhanya Mukherji, Executive Director of the Mayur Dance Academy who will also give an introduction to the dance form before the film begins.

In honour of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Kerala, the Freer Gallery, in association with the Embassy of India is presenting six films from that region's distinguished cinematic tradition.

On the eve of the Kerala Film Festival, Ambassador Raminder Singh Jassal, the Deputy Chief of the Indian Mission hosted a dinner that was attended by a cross section of American and Indian-American communities.

Ambassador Jassal used the occasion to trace the rich history and culture of Kerala and the contributions of that State to the cinematic world.

This film series is co-sponsored by Varghese and Rani George in collaboration with the Asia Society Washington Center and supported by the Government of Kerala, Directorate of Film Festivals, Sangeet Natak Academy, and the Public Diplomacy Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi.

Other films that will be screened are Manasarovar, Vasthuhara, Ponthan Mada, Olavum Teeravum and Nirmalayam.

The movies are in Malayalam with English subtitles.
