SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister JD Rymbai hung on, on Tuesday, despite being told by the party high command to quit, prolonging the leadership tussle in the state's ruling Congress.

The high command's stand was conveyed to Rymbai by Congress central observers Oscar Fernandes amd Ved Prakash.

The leaders asked Rymbai last night to resign  but did not cite any reason. The Chief Minister sought to see 'papers' from party President Sonia Gandhi before demitting office.

Rymbai, who attended office, said "I will not take any decision in the absence of ministers and legislators. Everything will be done in a transparent manner."

Rymbai, however, said he would abide by the Congress high command.

Rymbai took over from his predecessor DD Lapang in June last year following dissidence against Lapang among a section of Congress legislators.

Rymbai's confidant and Urban Affairs Minister Prestone Tyngsong said the chief minister would meet MLAs and ministers loyal to him on Wednesday before taking a decision.

Congress sources said Fernandes, All-India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Meghalaya, and Prakash, his deputy, returned to Delhi in the morning.
