MUMBAI: Here’s someone encouraging men to shoot below the belt. After receiving rave reviews for his documentary film, My Penis and I, filmmaker Lawrence Barraclough, 30, is putting up an exhibition to display photographs of penises in all their various shapes and sizes at London’s Foundry Art Galler.

Titled, Snap Your Chap, the exhibition encourages people to take photographs of their penises and post them on the website completely anonymously. The aim behind collecting and showcasing the largest-ever portraiture of penises is to encourage men to talk about their members' shape, size, girth…

Barraclough, who had a traumatic adolescence owing to his 3.5 inch penis, feels that men’s sense of masculinity has been tainted by the insecurity regarding their penis size. “The problem is not with the penis but with the way we look at it. The way we see our bodies has a lot to do with how the media portray them,” he told DNA in an e-mail interview. Men, who have grown up on a covert diet of porn with its mega mojo machines, would nod to that.

Barraclough hopes that once men are able to see what other men look like, they might then feel more confident about their own self-image. “The big problem is that men never discuss their anxieties. I want to bring penis problems into the open, in the same way that issues about breasts are commonly discussed,” he added.

His first film, My Penis and I, started as a personal quest and followed him on a two-year journey to discover if size really matters. After the cathartic experience he is now making a second film, My Penis and Everyone Else (which will incorporate the exhibition) which he hopes will make men realise that there is more to being a man than the mere inches.

After walking around London with a, “I want to talk about penises” signboard, soliciting support at Hyde Park’s Speakers’ Corner and frequenting football matches to sell the project to ‘macho’ men, Barraclough has received over a 100 photographs.

The members-only exhibition is on from February 24 to February 27. The exhibition hall is equipped with a photo booth for instant sign up. But remember: only images of flaccid penises will be accepted — broadcasting laws prevent screening of explicit images like erect penises.
