The low-fare train will run from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Bandra

NEW DELHI: Keeping his promise to provide luxury travel to the economically poor, Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav will flag off the New Delhi-Mumbai Garib Rath today.

The low-priced AC train is third in a series of the "poor special" trains which Yadav had promised during the last Railway budget. Two Garib Rath trains between Delhi-Patna and Saharsa-Amritsar are already running. Buoyed by their success, Yadav is likely to announce a few more trains in his forthcoming Railway Budget speech.

The ticket prices are 40 per cent lower than the regular cost of AC coach tickets in these trains. A one-way AC 3-tier journey in Delhi-Mumbai Garib Rath would cost Rs 667 as compared to Rs 1155 in regular trains while the AC chair car journey will cost Rs 552.

The fully air-conditioned train will run thrice a week --  on  Wednesday, Friday and Sunday -- and will be known as Hazrat Nizamuddin-Bandra Terminus Garib Rath Express (2909/2910). Starting at 1500 hrs it will reach Mumbai at 08.05 hrs the following day via Kota, Ratlam, Vadodara, Surat and Borivali. The train's return journey from Bandra Terminus will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays .
