Grief engulfs district as bodies of students, teachers brought to school

ELAVOOR (Kerala): A pall of gloom descended on Elavoor village as the bodies of 15 children and three teachers of the St Antony's School was brought to the institution for a final farewell.

The bodies would be kept at the school till 12 pm for the public to pay homage.

About 106 students along with 10 teachers and two non- teaching staff had set out for the excursion to the Thattekadu Bird Sanctuary from the same compound on Tuesday morning.

After visiting the sanctuary, they had gone for a boat ride in the Boothathankettu reservoir in three boats, of which one capsized, claiming the lives of 18 of them.

As 18 ambulances carrying the bodies reached the school this morning, parents, relatives, school authroities and local people who had gathered were unable to control their grief.

Police found it difficult to control the crowd surging to the school to pay their respects to the dead.

The children were all below 10 years of age.

State Ministers, V Vijaykumar, KP Rajendran, TU Kuruvilla, S Sharma, Paloli Mohammadkutty and Mullakara Ratnakaran have all reached the school.

Elavoor and Angamally are observing hartal as a mark of respect for the dead.

Chief Minister VS Achutanandan, who was in Delhi, would be reaching Elavoor by noon, official sources said.

Schools in Ernakulam district are closed on Wednesday as a mark of respect for the dead.
