Malegaon case: CBI to probe cross-border links

Since ISI’s involvement in 7/11 is now more than proved, it makes sense for the CBI to scout for similar ‘traits’ in the Malegaon case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will probe the possible involvement of Pakistan-based terrorists who may have helped local operatives in the September 8 Malegaon blasts.

The CBI on Saturday registered FIRs against the arrested accused and informed a special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

Investigations by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad had yielded information about “links” and “quality” of support lent by hardcore terror group members to a section of those who executed the textile town blasts.

The government was virtually “forced” to hand over the case to CBI following the ATS “bungle”. The ATS handling of the case drew flak after the Minorities’ Commission dubbed it being anti-Muslim. Home Minister RR Patil finally intervened in the case.

The ATS filed a 2000-page chargesheet in the case, but the probe is yet to yield positive leads on the “Pakistan-based operatives angle.”

The probe leaves unanswered the identity of the second Pakistani national who had sneaked into Malegaon in the second week of July along with Muzzamil — the other Pakistani. ATS documents show that the bombs were assembled by two Pakistanis.

The CBI will also investigate where the RDX — smuggled into Malegaon ahead of the blasts — was sourced from.

The ATS probe revealed conclusive proof of “common actors” in the July commuter trains bombings and the Malegaon blasts. And since ISI’s involvement in 11/7 is now more than proved, it makes sense for the CBI to scout for similar “traits” in the Malegaon case.

Mohammad Ali and Asif Khan alias Junnaid were involved in both 11/7 and the Malegaon blasts planning — ferrying the RDX to Sabbir Masiullah in whose compound the explosives were reportedly assembled.
