With the Left firm on its demand that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister be allowed to prove his majority on the floor of the House, Mulayam Singh’s fate now hangs in balance.

Armed with the report of Uttar Pradesh Governor T Rajeshwar Rao, the government on Saturday went into an overdrive drumming up support for the proposed move amongst its allies  and the main supporting partner, the Left parties.

Manmohan Singh also pitched in by seeking West Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya's help to bring the CPI(M) around  at a dinner he hosted for him on Saturday. Meanwhile, an embattled Mulayam Singh Yadav remained in constant telephonic touch with CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat, urging him to strain every sinew to stave off the dismissal.

The PM's Office also shared the contents of the UP Governor's report with Rajya Sabha MP and CPI(M) Politburo member Sitaram Yechury.

In his report, Rajeshwar Rao is said to have made a strong case for the dismissal of the government in the light of the Supreme Court's decision to disqualify all the 37 defecting BSP MLAs who had helped prop up the Mulayam Singh government.

The Governor is reported to have made the point that after a detailed perusal of the apex court judgment and after seeking legal advice he was of the view that the state government has "lost the moral right to continue".

He is also said to have expressed fears of large scale horse trading by the SP in the event of a floor test.  The issue is also being discussed at the ongoing Politburo meeting.

Leaders continued to reiterate the party's demand that the government be allowed to test its strength on the floor of the house. "Whether the government enjoys majority or not should be determined on the floor of the house. This has been our principled stand for the last 40 years," said Yechury.
