MUMBAI: A getaway to Murud in coastal Maharashtra for an extended weekend proved fatal for a bunch of college students when their speeding Scorpio rammed into a tree on the Alibaug-Murud road at 2:40pm on Thursday.

The accident killed five of them and injured two.

Divya Nair, Supriya Shetty, Mansi Khat, Mohammed Gaur, and Nilesh Chedani, all third-year students of Bhavan’s College in Andheri, were killed on the spot. Kuber Swarup and Shahi Nambiar suffered serious head and torso injuries.

“It is a clear case of rash driving,” said Superintendent of Police (Raigad division) Rajkumar Vatkar. “We have sent their blood samples to hospital to ascertain if the driver was under the influence of alcohol.”

They were travelling in three vehicles when the accident took place. The bodies of the dead youths were taken from the accident site to Alibaug civil hospital.
