MUMBAI: Office-goers, students and thousands others were caught unawares by a sudden bout of showers on Monday morning here, bringing a respite from steadily increasing temperature in India's financial hub.

Commuters could be seen scampering towards bus-shelters, railway stations, sun-shades, nearby buildings and any canopy to escape the unexpected downpour in the city and suburbs.

Even after the rain stopped around mid-morning an overcast sky loomed threateningly over the megalopolis, stoking fears of more showers during the day.

The sudden rains were caused by the western disturbances affecting northern parts of India, officials at the India Meteorological Department said.

When the disturbance -- running through west to east -- came below 25 degree northern latitude, including Mumbai, precipitation occurred.

The Colaba observatory of south Mumbai recorded 0.2 mm rains while the one in suburban Santa Cruz recorded 0.1 mm up to 8.30 am, the weather department said.
