NEW DELHI: In a move that could attract sharp political reaction, the government has asked India Inc to help it formulate schemes for generating increased employment for the minorities.

In a letter to apex business chambers, the Ministry of Minority Affairs has asked for information relating to emerging jobs in the private sector for the benefit of minority communities.

"A list of such jobs which have emerged/are emerging in the private sector after liberalisation of the economy may kindly be sent to this Ministry to enable us to formulate appropriate schemes for the welfare of minority communities," the Ministry of Minority Affairs letter has said.

It said the ministry was in the process of formulating various schemes for welfare of minorities.

Meanwhile, according to sources, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has sought opinion of the Law Ministry as to how reservation in the private sector can be made mandatory with an amendment in the Constitution.

The sources said the amendment proposed may include reservation for the minority communities as well, as demanded by Fertiliser and Chemicals Ministry Ram Vilas Paswan.

Commenting on these initiatives, President of the industry body Assocham Venugopal Dhoot said the Prime Minister should appoint a high level committee to examine feasibility of the reservation in the private sector based on the economic criteria.
