MUMBAI: Unilever plc is going through a major restructuring phase. On Thursday, the board of the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods major proposed to induct three luminaries — a leading Indian software entrepreneur, a leading French bio-physicist and a leading banker from South Africa.

In a press statement, the company announced its plan to induct NR Narayana Murthy, Infosys co-founder and chairman, as a non-executive member.

The women to be inducted are are Genevieve Berger, a professor of Biophysics and Medical Imaging at Paris University, and Hixonia Nyasulu, non-executive director of Sasol Ltd and Anglo Platinum and an advisory board member of JP Morgan South Africa.

Nyasulu was previously a non-executive director at the Development Bank of South Africa. Berger is also chairman of advisory board “Health” of the EU Commissioner for Research.

Until 2003, she was director-general of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

Lord Simon, chairman of the nomination committee said: “Unilever is delighted with these outstanding candidates as they further strengthen the expertise and independence of the board and, of course, bring diversity of background and experience.”

Murthy, along with the others, are being proposed for election as non-executive members at the annual general meetings in Rotterdam on May 15, and in London on May 16.

Murthy has led key local corporate governance initiatives such as chairman of the committee on corporate governance, appointed by Sebi, and serves as a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade and Industry. He’s also IT advisor to several Asian countries.

Murthy is also a member of the Asia Pacific Advisory Board of BT Group Plc and a non-executive member of NDTV.

Unilever previously announced in January that Michael Treschow will succeed Antony Burgmans as chairman, following his election to the board.

Antony Burgmans said: “ I would also like to welcome Genevieve Berger, Narayana Murthy and Hixonia Nyasulu to the board. Together their experience and background will be of enormous value to the business.”
