KATHMANDU: In continuing violence in Nepal's Terai region, one person was killed and 12 injured in police firing after potesters defied curfew and attacked policemen in Birgnj town, an official said on Saturday.

"One person died and at least 12 others were injured in police firing afer potesters defying the curfew attacked policemen," said the officer. Curfew had been imposed in Birgunj, Inaruwa and Biratnagar in eastern Nepal to prevent any further violence.

In Dhanusha town, the Nepali Congress (Democratic) and Nepal Sadbhavana Party staged peaceful demonstrations on Saturday backing the movement for greater representation of the Terai region in the Parliament.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission's regional office in Biratnagar has launched preliminary investigation on Thursday's firing incident in Inaruwa Municipality in which two people were killed and three dozen others injured.

Mahanta Thakur, the convenor of the government committee formed to hold talks with the agitating groups, has urged the parties to begin dialogue to resolve the issue. "The government is committed to unconditional negotiations," he said.

However, the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, which has been leading an agitation on the issue for the past three weeks, has demanded the resignation of Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitoula over the killing of civilians in eastern Nepal during the anti-government demonstrations.

Earlier in the week, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala promised that the region would be allocated more seats in parliament based on its population and that the country would have a federal system of government.

The violence in the Himalayan nation threatens to cast a cloud over the peace process, which has brought a decade-long civil war to an end and the former Maoist rebels into Parliament.
