The suicide attack in Dera Ismail Khan is the third to rock Pakistan in the last four days and comes two days after another bombing left 14 people dead in the NWFP capital.
Pakistani police and para-military troops have been put on high alert throughout the country.
In Sindh, some 50,000 security personnel have been deployed after intelligence reports said some suicide attacks were being planned on the Muharram processions, Inspector General of Police Jahangir Mirza said.
"We are concerned and are taking all possible measures to ensure the security is under control," he said, adding intelligence inputs suggested that suicide bombers were planning to target some prominent Shia leaders in Karachi.
Speaking on the spate of bombings, Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao claimed pro-active law enforcement agencies had foiled what could have been more devastating attacks.
"We feel we have done a lot to control the law and order situation in the country. In the incidents in Islamabad and Peshawar the suicide bombers were foiled and a major disaster was averted," Sherpao said.
The motive behind the three attacks appeared to be to spread chaos in the country on the occasion of Muharram. "But we are still investigating further to find out more details," he added
Sherpao said that Pakistan was facing the problem "of people crossing over to create terrorism".
"We are alive to the situation but such things will keep on happening but our law enforcement agencies are pro-active and playing a solid role."
