MUMBAI: India’s failure to kill off the four-match ODI series at the Chepauk on Saturday has not gone down well with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

A day after the defeat, BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah slammed the team management and selection committee for resting match-winners.

“The priority should have been winning rather than experimenting,” Shah told DNA. “We’re extremely disappointed that the team lost an opportunity to clinch the series. Now there is every danger that it could be levelled by the West Indies.”

Shah said Ganguly and Dhoni, both rested for the game, should have been part of the playing XI. “The BCCI believes the management should have experimented in the fourth match, only if the series had been sealed in the third. Experiments should not be done at the cost of winning,” he said.

The BCCI, Shah said, expects the top 15 players to play in the four-match Sri Lanka series, the first match of which will be held in Kolkata on February 6.

Asked if the BCCI will take up the matter with the selectors and the team management, Shah said the board has already discussed the issue with the two parties.

Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar said the selection committee had a few other things in mind. While expressing his disappointment that the winning streak had been interrupted, Vengsarkar said he expected India to win the match with the XI that played in Chennai.

“We had to gauge Yuvraj Singh’s fitness and give Robin (Uthappa) a chance,” he said. “I agree with what the board secretary says. We should have won the series first. But we expected to win with that XI.”

Coach Greg Chappell refused to be drawn into the issue. “I’m not supposed to discuss team selection with the media,” he said.
