Craving to take revenge for the murder of their gang-member John D'Souza, four undertrials killed Asgar Ali Mehendi in the Arthur Road jail premises at around 7.45a.m on Sunday morning.

Mehendi, who along with other undertrials was standing in a queue to have his tea, was stabbed in the chest, neck, back and abdomen.

He was rushed to JJ hospital after the attack. More than 500 undertrials witnessed the shocking scene, but refused to intervene, said jail sources.

He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after a three-hour operation. Mehendi was the main accused and conspirator in the murder of D'Souza on December 23 last year. He was lodged in the jail since 2001, and has several cases of robbery and theft registered against him across Mumbai. The NM Joshi Marg police station where a case of murder has been registered, will on Monday apply to the court for the custody of the accused Rajesh Gupta, Mohamed Shaikh, Irfan Shaikh and Irfan Ishtiaque Shaikh. All the accused had cases of petty crime such as theft, robbery and extortion registered against them. "An aluminium spoon was sharpened and used as a weapon to stab Mehendi. We have recovered the weapon from the scene of crime and will interrogate the accused after getting their custody," said senior police inspector, Sunil Temkar.

All the accused and the deceased were lodged in Circle 11 in Barrack Number One.

The jail authorities, sensing possible retaliatory action, had already applied for the transfer of members of D'Souza faction. "We had managed to shift three of them to Thane prison and were awaiting permission to move the others. Before the transfer, the murder happened," said senior Jail Superintendent, Swati Sathe.  According to jail sources, both groups had joined hands and committed robbery and theft.
