LONDON: A 32-year-old Indo-Canadian woman was among 120 animal rights activists who stripped naked in a demonstration in Barcelona to protest against the killing of chinchilla rodents for making fur coats.

Anita Singh, who works for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), said: “I’ll gladly bare my skin if it will help save animals’ skins.  With so many fashionable clothing choices, there’s absolutely no excuse to wear fur.” Chinchillas are small rodents native to the Andes mountains in South America and belong to the family chinchillidae. In Chinese, they are called lóng mao, which literally means “dragon-cat”.

Chinchilla fur is considered the softest in the world and is 30 times softer than human hair. It takes 120 chinchillas to make one fur coat, and hence the protest by 120 activists.

Born and brought up in Montreal, Anita Singh is a medal-winning figure skater and had graduated with honours from St Thomas School in West Island, Montreal, according to a PETA statement.  Currently based in London, Anita Singh is PETA’s Europe campaign coordinator. Sunday’s protest in Barcelona was not the first time that she had stripped naked for the cause of animals.

Last year, she and other activists had staged a similar protest in London to stop the British royals from ordering the deaths of Canadian black bears, whose skins are fashioned into ceremonial hats for the Queen’s Guards. Stating that drastic things call for drastic measures, she had told BBC then: “Showing their (protestors’) vulnerable side depicts exactly what these bears go through. They are naked, they are vulnerable, and we are killing them.”
