Bangaloreans accuse politicians of engineering riots

BANGALORE: Bangalore returned to normalcy on Monday after riots sparked tension in the tech city for two days. Both citizens and industry leaders squarely blamed politicians for engineering the clashes to strengthen their vote banks.

The roads were chock-a-clock once again today as people resumed their duties.  But schools and colleges in the riot-affected areas of the city were closed down as a precautionary measure. Additional police force was also deployed at various strategic areas to prevent any further tension, said Bipin Gopal Krishna, additional commissioner of police (Law & Order).

The trouble began after unemployed Congress politicians organised a protest "rally" last Friday, protesting against Saddam's hanging.

While condemning the US, the rallyists thought it fit to pull down a few banners that the RSS had put up as part of its Golwalkar's birth centenary celebrations. The RSS busybodies also took a chance to retaliate against it on Sunday.

The clashes came in for severe criticism in a city that saw its last major communal clash in 1994.

"The incident has definitely tarnished the image of Bangalore as an IT hub," said Achutan Nair, vice-president (strategic resourcing) of Wipro Ltd.

"There was no need to hold a rally to protest Saddam's execution after three weeks and only two days before the Hindu Samavesh. It amounts to arm-twisting of the government by the BJP (which is part of the ruling coalition)," said B S Murthy, chief executive officer of Human Capital Consulting.

"Goons always back up politicians for their own benefits. They work hand-in-glove with them and create tension at their beckon and yet slip away," said Venkat Kedlaya, president of the Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
