MUMBAI: The Vakola police on Thursday night arrested a 32-year-old for allegedly killing his alcoholic brother at their residence. The deceased, identified as Prakash Sambhaji Shigwan, 45, was a carpenter by profession and used to stay in Ranjit Tiwari Chawl, on Golibar Road, at Vakola in Santacruz (East).

According to the police, the incident took place at around 10.30 pm, when Prakash entered the house in an inebriated condition.

“Prakash was alcoholic. He used to abuse and assault the family members. His younger brother Chandrakant was frustrated with his elder brother’s habits. On Thursday night, when Prakash again returned home under the influence of alcohol, he got into an argument with Chandrakant,” said Investigating Officer and Police Sub-Inspector Bhupat Shinde with Vakola police station.

Shinde added that Chandrakant picked up an iron rod and hit Prakash on his neck forcefully at least four times, due to which Prakash died on the spot. Prakash’s wife Kamla, then registered a complaint with Vakola police station. Prakash’s body was later taken to Cooper Hospital for post-mortem.

“We have arrested Chandrakant under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code, for murder,” Shinde said adding that, “Prakash used to get involved in brawl with others and a complaint had been registered against him by the neighbours at the police station.”
