NEW DELHI: Noting that sufficient steps have already been taken by the government in unravelling the Nithari serial killings, the Supreme Court on Friday rejected a PIL which among other things wanted the setting up of special monitoring cells across the country to prevent recurrence of such gruesome incidents.

The petition, filed by an NGO, had also sought a CBI inquiry into the killings and initiation of strong disciplinary action against the police officials who failed to act promptly on the initial complaints lodged by parents of the missing children.

A Bench of Justices BN Aggarwal and PP Naolekar, however, felt there was no merit in the petition as the plea for a CBI inquiry and disciplinary action against the erring officials had already been initiated by the government.

The apex court cannot be expected to monitor the case on a day-to-day basis as sufficient steps have already been taken by the government in this regard, the Bench observed while refusing to entertain the PIL.

In its petition, the NGO Akhil Bharatiya Dalit Mahila Evam Sudhar Samiti has alleged that the Nithari killings was part of a conspiracy hatched by an organised human organs trade and hence sought a CBI inquiry.

It also sought direction to central and state governments to set up special monitoring cells at every district headquarters to monitor cases pertaining to kidnapping of children and women so that such grisly incidents could be prevented.
