Customs take the pants off smuggler

A 52-year-old man was arrested by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Customs at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, in Mumbai, on Tuesday while trying to smuggle out US and Indian currency collectively valued at Rs14.90 lakh. The man had concealed the currency in his thighs with elastic crepe knee caps and undergarments.

Sources said that the accused identified as Shaji Hadi Thangal has been remanded to judicial custody till January 31 by the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court, at Esplanade on Wednesday.

Sources said that Thangal was intercepted by AIU officers on Tuesday when he was proceeding for security check after he had been cleared by the Immigration and Customs. He was supposed to take a flight to Dubai via Kuwait. Upon interrogation, he said that he was carrying 5,000 US Dollars with him. The search of his person resulted in the recovery of India currency worth Rs2.55 lakh and assorted foreign currency collectively valued at Rs14.90 lakh. Except the declared amount of foreign currency, the assorted Indian and foreign currency were found concealed in his undergarments and secured around his thighs. He was arrested under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

He revealed that he had received Indian currency worth Rs2.55 lakh after selling his shop at his native place at Bangalore. Sources added that he was carrying a bundle of currency notes worth 5,000 US Dollars for one Bashir for a monetary consideration of Rs 3,000 and the other four bundles of currency notes each containing assorted foreign currency 5,000 US Dollars for one Yusuf for a monetary consideration of Rs 12,000.
