Early on Sunday morning, an alleged robber, Satnaam Singh alias Sardar Ajitsingh Wirk, 35, was shot dead in a police encounter near Bandra Reclamation.

According to a tip, Singh was to meet some associates at the Bandra Reclamation bus depot. Thus, a police team laid a trap. At 12:10am, two rickshaws reached the spot; while one of the rickshaws left, Singh and two of his associates, suspected to be Iqbal Qasam Pathan, 34, and Pappu Nepali, 32, came out of the other rickshaw.

“Singh and his associates opened fire when asked to surrender. We fired in retaliation. Pathan and Nepali managed to flee,” said Sunil Ghoshalkar, assistant PI, who was involved in the operation.

Singh was rushed to Bhabha Hospital, but was declared dead before arrival, he added. The police seized one country-made revolver and three live rounds from Singh.

Singh was involved in at least 20 cases involving robbery, dacoity, murder, extortion and MCOCA. He was also wanted in a money exchange case at Oshiwara in 2006.
