After the Nandigram tragedy, in which seven farmers opposing land acquisition lost their lives forcing the chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to admit that the whole process was a blunder, the CPI (M) has adopted another approach to get the villagers in their fold.
The Left cadres will start a door-to-door campaign in the villages of the state to spread awareness about the requirement of industrial development among the farmers. The farmers will also get lessons on the necessity of land acquisition for this purpose.
According to a central committee member of CPI(M), this campaign will be the beginning of a process to convince farmers acquisition of land for setting up industries, as was promised by Bhattacharjee.
The party has assigned its youth wing - the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the student wing - the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) to activate their members to take a lead role in this campaigning process. The campaigning will have three stages. “In the first stage, the farmers will be explained on the necessity of industrialisation in the state and the requirement of land acquisition for the purpose. The second stage will detail about the employment generation because of the industrialisation. The third stage will be a balance sheet of the existing income from agriculture of the farmers concerned against the remuneration that they would receive as compensation for their land,” the CPI(M) leader said.
While this will be the general line of campaigning, there would be special initiatives and line of campaigning for the minority community, keeping in mind that over 80 per cent of the minority community in West Bengal is solely dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. The West Bengal cabinet is aware that any hectic land acquisition would result into erosion of their minority vote bank.
As part of the initiative, a special cabinet committee for welfare of state minorities has been constituted with the state minorities’ welfare minister Abdus Sattar as its chairman. The committee, in association with Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), will prepare a detailed report on the existing condition of the minorities in the state. The party affiliated mass organisations, on the other hand, will start propaganda among the minorities on the initiatives of the state on minorities’ development.
According to Sattar, the committee will recommend a new scheme for educating the minorities.
