A combing operation launched by the Shivaji Nagar police during the early hours of Saturday resulted in the seizure of 90 kg of mandrax tablets, valued in the international market at Rs 2.5 crore, from a slum tenement in Mandala, Govandi. This is the largest seizure of the narcotic over the last eight months in Mumbai, according to deputy commissioner of police Niket Kaushik.

“We are investigating whether the consignment was intended for illegal export out of India. Probably, the mandrax tablets, which are quite popular as a complement to drinking to induce a bigger high at parties, were intended to meet the demand during the new year revelries in the city,” he told DNA.

Kaushik added that the large demand for mandrax is quite apparent from the haul. The seizure was made from the house of fifty-year-old Ghulam Hussain. Senior police inspector attached to the Shivaji Nagar police station S D Nimhan, revealed, “Unevenness in the flooring of his residence aroused our suspicions and we immediately organised two witnesses before searching his residence.”

A neatly dug hole over which a cot had been placed was discovered during the search. “From there we retrieved an aluminium box, where the 90 kg of mandrax tablets had been placed by Hussain. He has also provided the police with information about another associate who is higher up in this trade and we have launched a manhunt for him.”

Just three months ago, encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and his unit attached to the DN Nagar police station had busted a large mandrax manufacturing unit in Andheri and seized two machines being used by an Afghan national with three Indian partners to manufacture the drug.
