LEICESTER (London): An Indian shop assistant was stabbed to death by a man thought to be a cleaner at the store in Leicester.

William Otim Alikori, 31, on Wednesday repeatedly stabbed Rina Panchal, 26, working with TK Maxx, an American discount clothing store, and later surrendered to police, who charged him with murder.

Alikori, thought to be a cleaner at the store, is due to appear in court on Friday, according to the Daily Mail.

"Rina was a brave, sweet, fun-loving person. She had a bubbly personality, and apart from being my wife she was also my best friend," Rina's husband, Jayant said.

According to police, Rina was stabbed several times after 8 am, an hour before the store was to open. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"We are working closely with staff at the store to find out what happened," the police said.

"We are closing the store for few days as a mark of respect. We feel it is the right thing to do," store vice-president Deborah Dolce said.

Dozens of floral tributes from friends and colleagues were laid outside the store on Thursday.
