LONDON: Even as the rumours of the imminent royal engagement and wedding continues to dominate projections for the new year, Prince William has been told by close aides that he should either marry his long term girlfriend, Kate Middleton quickly or cool the relationship for a while.

The Prince’s private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton has told 24 year-old William that it will be impossible for him to continue his relationship with Kate as it stands now when he begins his military service as Second lieutenant with The Blues and Royals next month.

“William has been told that Kate can’t travel with him on army time or live with him on base unless they are married. It is a matter of army protocol,” a security source is quoted as saying in a British tabloid.

“If an engagement were announced, Kate would receive Scotland Yard protection, a marriage could be arranged relatively quickly and they could settle into married life within the private and secure bosom of the army,” he added.

The 24-year-old art graduate has been dating the future king ever since they were at University together three years ago and has been courting publicity much like Princess Diana did when she was engaged to Prince Charles about a quarter of a century ago.

Kate, daughter of former airline stewards, is being moulded into a fashion icon with newspapers using up reams of newsprint on what she wears and how she looks.

“Kate is not a style icon. Not yet, at least. There’s potential there. Good basic material, a good bod and great skin. But it’s early days. Kate is unformed, sartorially speaking,” said Polly Vernon, deputy editor of Observer Woman Magazine.

According to Vernon style icons are not born but made and feels Kate will be made just as her late would-be-mother-in-law Diana was.

The “one-time Vogue deputy editor Anna Harvey took Diana under her wing in the mid-80s and encouraged her to ditch the Laura Ashley flounces in favour of cocktail dresses and signature crisp white shirts. Someone professionally chic will make Kate over,” said Vernon.

You can call me Catherine

Kate Middleton is insisting on being called Catherine — in an attempt to sound more regal as she waits for Prince William to pop the question.

The stunning brunette, who was christened Catherine, thinks it has a more “formal ring” to it, according to friends. One colleague said: “She thinks it’s much more suited to being a princess.”
