MUMBAI: Although the BMC had said it would effect a 100 per cent cut in water supply on Wednesday to carry out repairs in pipelines, the supply was choked only by half. Many areas of the city received between 20 and 50 per cent of normal supply.
But the cut meant that low pressure was created in the city’s 26 reservoirs, constricting flow to hilly areas, and farther regions.
For example, water supplied to the eastern suburbs was only 250 mld as against the normal requirement of 850 million litres per day. Most of the water was supplied to installations such as BARC and the refineries.
The cut was announced after civic officials began a major isolation operation to bring water from the Mumbai 3A Project into the existing network. “We did not want people to bank on our limited supply,” said Additional Commissioner Manu Srivastav. Normal supply will be restored by morning today.
