Nepal's interim Constitution to be promulgated within 10 days

KATHMANDU: Nepal's interim Constitution would be promulgated within next ten days to pave the way for the rebels to join the government.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has assured top Maoist leaders that the interim Constitution would be announced within ten days, Maoist spokesman Krishna Bahadur Mahara said quoting Koirala, according to The Kathmadu Post.

Mahara said that Koirala and Maoist chief Prachanda have also agreed to formulate necessary laws soon to conduct the constituent assembly election within June 2007 to rewrite the constitution.

The Prime Minister had given the assurance to the Maoist leaders who met Koirala to press for immediate promulgation of the interim Constitution, which was finalised in mid-December.

Koirala has been saying that unless the Maoists' arms were managed, the interim Statute would not be announced.

The two leaders agreed to settle the key issues including interim Parliament, interim government and management of arms at the earliest, Mahara said.

Both the leaders have realised that these important tasks should not be prolonged, he said.

Koirala has told the Maoists that they should not question the government's sincerity towards the peace process, Nepali Congress central committee member Arjun Narsingh KC said quoting Koirala.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Bhoj Raj Ghimire said, the commission was making necessary preparations to hold the Constituent Assembly Polls by mid-June 2007.

He told reporters that, the laws relating to the CA polls will be formulated within a week.

The government has assured me that the Voters' List Act and the Act related to the function, duty and rights of the Election Commission would be brought this week, he said.
