NEW DELHI: Ahead of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statement in Parliament on Indo-US nuclear deal, BJP's raising the political temperature by demanding that government reject the US legislation on the pact is a clear attempt to drive a wedge between Congress and the Left, key outside supporters of UPA.

The BJP's attack on the US law is another attempt to outwit Congress after its recent announcement about supporting President A P J Abdul Kalam for a second term in Rashtrapati Bhawan. The announcement was considered significant ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections early next year.

To a specific question whether BJP would join hands with Left parties in pressurising the government on the nuclear deal, Sinha said however that "there is no question of joining hands with this party or that party. We demand full discussion in Parliament."

The saffron party's move could also put the Left on the back foot as CPI (M) General Secretary Prakash Karat had said that his party had thought of withdrawing support at one point of time in wake of the Indo-US nuclear agreement.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister P R Dasmunsi said Mukherjee would make a statement in Parliament on the nuclear deal.

He said two days -- December 18 and 19 -- have been reserved for a discussion on the deal and advancing of the date depends on other businesses of the House.
