MUMBAI: Commuters traveling on the western corridor can look forward to a safer journey.

Civic authorities will soon start construction of three road-over-bridges (ROBs) and two pedestrian subways across Western Railway (WR) tracks between Andheri and Dahisar.

The stretch between Jogeshwari and Goregaon is particularly notorious for the number of fatal accidents across its level crossings.

But once the construction of the ROBs and pedestrian subways is complete, the six level crossings on the WR tracks will be permanently closed to traffic.

“The crossing between Malad-Kandvili (south) is a death crossing and people don’t use the foot-over-bridge,” said a senior WR spokes person. There are as many as 10 level crossings on the entire stretch of WR, all manned by railway officials.

The structures, to be completed in two years, will replace the two level crossings between the Andheri -Jogeshwari station, two crossings between Jogeshwari-Goregaon and another between Malad-Kandivili.

Two ROBs named Jogeshwari South will connect traffic between SV Road and the Western Express Highway.

The Jogeshwari North ROB will connect SV Road (Ram Mandir Road) to Nirlon on the east side. The two ROBs are World Bank-funded MUTP projects costing Rs38 crore and Rs24 crore respectively.

The third ROB is being built in Kandivli in lieu of the Malad-Kandivili level crossing. Though construction on the Kandivili ROB had started on the west side, it was discontinued because of delay in permission from the Centre, which owns land on the east side.

Having received the permission recently, the work has resumed on the ROB. The Rs18-crore ROB will be a 60-feet bridge with two lanes each for to and fro traffic.

The project will require land to be cleared before construction begins. Each ROB involves land portions falling under WR , MMRDA and BMC. All the three bodies have initiated the land acquisition process. “The BMC has already deposited Rs33 crore for land acquisition,” said a senior civic official.

As far the subways are concerned, one pedestrian subway will be built near Jawahar Nagar in Goregaon instead of Jogeshwari-Goregaon level crossing. Another pedestrian subway at Daulat Nagar in Borivli will complement the recently-built Sudhir Phadke flyover over the tracks. This subway will be built between Borivli and Dahisar stations in lieu of the Borivli level crossing, connect the east to the west. Both pedestrian subways will be built directly under the railway tracks using the Box Pushing method that involves excavating tunnels from one end. The BMC has already paid Rs3.25 crore as deposit to WR for the subway. WR has started issuing tenders and work is expected to start shortly.
