A 5-year-old girl, who had been missing since November 29, was found dead on Sunday at a pit near her house at Malwani in Malad.

Kazia Chadhari, a student of Holy Angels in Malvani went missing at 9.30 in the night on Wednesday while she was playing outside her house.

The news brought an angry mob to the street.  At least 50 persons, including activists of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), gathered outside the police station, alleging that the police investigation into the complaint lodged immediately after the girl went missing was lackadaisical.

“The girl could have been saved had the police taken the complaint seriously,” said Afzal Shiekh, local president of Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) minority cell.

Senior police inspector, Malvani police station, Sanjay Jadhav, termed the allegations baseless. He said, “The claims that police did not investigate the missing complaint are untrue. We did our best in the case,” he said.

Meanwhile, the body has been sent to Borivli’s Bhagwati hospital for post-mortem.

Till late in the night, the police are yet to establish whether the girl died of drowning or fell to  a kidnapping plot.

“There are no external injuries on her body,” Jadhav said, adding, “we can only establish the cause of death after getting the post mortem report.”

The girl’s relatives were waiting at the hospital to get the victim’s body after the post mortem.

Parents and teachers from the girl’s school will take out a march in protest against the incident.

“We believe the investigations into the case are not up to the mark,” said K Simpson, the principal of Holy Angels School.
