My brothers are caring and they can’t commit such an act: Bharti

NEW DELHI: Though Bharti Yadav finished her deposition in camera on Thursday, the court asked media not to disclose the content till the statement was officially released.

With the statement out in the open on Friday, the public prosecutor said Bharti had not retracted from her initial statement, but modified it simply.

Neelam Katara, on her part, said that she was satisfied with Bharti’s testimony as it established that the two did have a relationship. In her statement, Bharti accepted that she sent letters, cards and gifts to Nitish but she added there was nothing special in it.

Regarding her brothers,  she said they are caring and they could never commit such a heinous act. About her relationship with Nitish, Bharti said that she was close to him but the intimacy judged from the photographs was wrong. She accepted that she had opened a joint bank account with Nitish in the BNP Paribas bank and had submitted Nitish’s address as her residential address.

She also admitted to having flown with Nitish to Mumbai on a Jet Airways flight to celebrate her sister Bhavna’s birthday.

Regarding the wedding of friend Shivani where Nitish disappeared on the night of February 16, 2002, she said: “My brothers wished the couple and then left. They did not even eat dinner as they told Shivani’s husband that they had to leave. I don’t remember what time I arrived or left. I don’t remember what time other friends, including Nitish, left but it was very late.”

Bharti denied Neelam Katara’s claim that she had called her 12 times on the morning of February 17, 2002. “I did not have a cell phone at that time and did not call Neelam Katara. I had no information on what happened that night,” she said.

She further said that she learnt of Nitish’s death from the newspapers.

She also denied making a statement to police blaming her family for Nitish’s disappearance.

“I spoke to a woman police officer but don’t know if she put that in writing,” Bharti said.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant bail to Vikas Yadav, the prime accused in the Nitish Katara murder case.
