LAHORE: The Pakistani music industry has bloomed significantly in the recent past, affecting the exclusive hold of Indian songs’ listenership in Pakistan.

According to the results of a nationwide opinion poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan on media habits, it transpired that the popularity of Indian music in Pakistan has suffered a reasonable dent over the past 25 years because Pakistani music has emerged substantially. However, Indian songs continue to enjoy popularity in Pakistan, say the results of the survey. The study reveals that almost one-third (37 per cent) of the Pakistani population prefers to buy cassettes of Indian songs over any other, while less than one-fourth (19 per cent) prefer only Pakistani songs. 38 per cent of respondents like to listen to both Pakistani and Indian numbers.

The survey had been conducted by Gallup Pakistan a number of times in the past, revealing that exclusive preference for Indian music was as high as 54 per cent in year 1980, which declined to 50 per cent in year 2000 before dropping significantly to 37 per cent in 2006. The results of the survey show that exclusive listenership of the Pakistani music has nearly doubled from 27 per cent to 42 per cent during 1980-2000. However, it dropped significantly to 19 per cent in 2006, thereby showing an increasing trend for listenership of both the Pakistani as well as the Indian music.

Analysts at Gallup Pakistan explained this pattern by saying that greater access to Indian music through cable/satellite TV has blurred the distinction between Indian and Pakistani music, hence creating a trend of listening to both songs, rather than exclusively preferring either Pakistani or Indian.

Gallup Pakistan is affiliated with Gallup International. the survey was based on a sample of over 1,500 respondents in the urban areas of all four provinces across Pakistan. This sample was statistically selected to cover all age groups, income and educational levels.
