When it comes to popularity in India, nothing beats Bollywood and cricket. It was therefore not surprising to see producer Yash Chopra and leg spinner Anil Kumble share the same stage at an event on Thursday. However, what made this event special was the presence of another luminary — the head of a global software giant — in their company who showed that he was no less a crowd-puller and an entertainer than the other two.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was the star attraction at ‘IndiMIX ‘06’, an event in which web designers, developers and decision makers participated to discuss the future of the internet. Ballmer charmed the audience at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) auditorium with his keynote address, which was interspersed with witty one-liners. During his speech, Ballmer highlighted new technologies that would change the face of the internet in the coming future. Ballmer also showcased Microsoft’s strategies and vast array of next generation products.

Ballmer said that Microsoft will be unleashing a new version of Windows server that would simplify the development of a website. Speaking about Windows Vista, Ballmer said that Vista was finally ready to be rolled out. He jokingly added that Microsoft henceforth would not have a project that stretched as long as Vista did. He also said that Microsoft would improve its search capabilities and provide interactive and personalised form of digital advertisements. Speaking about India, the Microsoft chief predicted a ‘personalised television’ revolution, which would move ahead of cable television viewership in coming years.

While Ballmer was at his flamboyant best, Anil Kumble’s poise and computer knowledge came in for a lot of praise. The record breaking leg-spinner, known for his unerring line and length, was sharp and precise while showcasing his company’s new software Matchcast.

Kumble, who is the director of Stump Vision, a cricketing software company, said that Matchcast was developed using Windows Vista, Windows Presentation Foundation and Office 2007. To be launched in January 2007, Matchcast allows the user to watch a cricket match live and have access to relevant data at the same time. Kumble also demonstrated a product that allows the user to maintain a scorebook of cricket matches.

Chopra said that he was mesmerised by the internet and was aware of its tremendous reach. It was for these reasons that his company had been adopting emerging internet technologies since the launch of its website in 1998. “It is difficult to imagine life without the internet,” Chopra said.

He said the problem of piracy could be tackled using new technologies. Ballmer launched a revamped website of Yash Raj films on this occasion. Microsoft’s Windows Media Digital Restriction Management (WMDRM) technology has been used in the development of the website.
