GAZA STRIP: A leader in the Islamist party Hamas that heads the Palestinian government on Wednesday called for a resumption of suicide attacks in Israel, following the deaths of 18 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, head of the Hamas-led cabinet, demanded an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council .

"I call on the Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to stop these massacres against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank," the prime minister told reporters shortly before an urgent meeting of his cabinet.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Hamas-led Palestinian government said Israel must be "wiped from the face of the Earth" after 18 Palestinians died on Wednesday when Israeli shells slammed into the Gaza Strip.

"Israel should be wiped from the face of the Earth. It is an animal state that recognises no human worth. It is a cancer that should be eradicated and everyone should take part to make that happen," said Ghazi Hamad.
