Cities unite to fight common problems

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in collaboration with CITYNET and PRO-ACT will host a four-day congregation in Mumbai from Thursday.

Over 200 representatives from local and national governments and civil groups from 20 countries will meet to deliberate on the challenges in minimising solid waste, promoting e-governance and enhancing city-to-city co-operation in the Asia-Pacific and Europe. The seminar will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

While Yokohama, (Japan) is the President of CITYNET, Mumbai, (India) is the First Vice President and Bangkok, (Thailand) is the Second Vice President of the two-decade old Network.

Along with Mumbai municipal commissioner Johny Joseph, Jayantha Liyanage, municipal commissioner, Colombo and Gilles Buna, deputy mayor of Lyon will address the gathering.

A two-day workshop on Solid Waste Management, along with one on promoting e-governance in Asia-Pacific cities are the key events of the four-day session. Foreign delegates will also witness the progress of the Solid Waste Management Recycling plant in Bandra.
