The state police plan a state-wide awareness campaign for professional drivers. This will, however, not include drivers from the state transport department.

“There are a number of reasons, indicating why accidents happen. There could be bad roads, but these days accidents are happening because the roads are in good condition,” special Inspector General of Police Vijay Kamble said. In the recent times there have been many accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway because the road is in good condition which prompts drivers to speed up. “Driving is a laborious job in which the person is required to be mentally and physically alert. But most drivers push themselves beyond their limits,” he said.

That is why the police decided to chalk out an awareness campaign plan. The plan, still on the drawing board, will target professional drivers. “Drivers from the state transport are subjected to regular check-ups and they have a monitoring system which helps identify drivers who are not fit for driving,” Kamble said. The plan will primarily target such drivers, who work with private companies like tourist bus operators, private taxis and tour operators.
