NEW DELHI: On the eve of President Hu Jintao’s visit to India, the CPI(M) and China are pushing for a “Pentagon” to counter Uncle Sam’s Pentagon. The proposed “Pentagon” would comprise Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICs).

The CPI(M) is hoping that a joint communiqué at the end of Jintao’s visit from November 20 would reflect concerns of both the countries vis-à-vis the emerging unipolar world.

CPI(M) Politburo member and Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury, who returned to Delhi on Wednesday after a week-long visit to China, where he held discussions with senior Chinese ministers, briefed PM Manmohan Singh and external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee on the Chinese desire to improve and upgrade ties with India.

As part of the Pentagon, first India and China should forge partnership in economic and strategic sectors. Jintao’s visit is significant in the background of strengthening trilateral relations between India, China and Russia, Yechury said. “India has edge in software and IT, China has edge in manufacturing and hardware. There will be new synergy in these areas if India and China come together,” he said.

The next step should be multilateralism and strengthening of the BRICs, Yechury said adding: “In today’s world, the answer to US unilateralism should come from this Pentagon.”

Yechury also pleaded with both the Prime Minister and external affairs minister to stop discriminating Chinese firms who are willing to invest in India. Referring to restrictions imposed on various Chinese companies wanting collaboration with Indian projects, he said while there can no compromise on security considerations, the restrictions should not be “country specific” but sector specific.

Elaborating he said, some Chinese firms have been blacklisted citing security reasons on the ground that they also built ports in Pakistan, while US some firms, which is developing ports in Pakistan are allowed to operate in India.
