NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ruled that any adverse action like termination of the services of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Director P Venugopal by the premier institute would be subject to the outcome of the writ petition pending in the matter.

Justice P Anil Kumar had permitted the institute to go ahead with its scheduled meeting.

A crucial meeting of the 17-member decision making body of the AIIMS was to discuss charges against Venugopal relating to "failures and mismanagement" in the functioning of the institute.

The meeting got off to a tumultuous start, with Bharatiya Janata Party leader VK Malhotra walking out in a huff minutes after it began.

"The meeting is illegal, improper, unconstitutional and sub judice," Malhotra told reporters as he walked out of the meeting.

He said he was unhappy that minutes of the July 5 meeting were circulated to members only today, after the meeting started.

Malhotra said the minutes had no mention of the decision taken against Venugopal at the previous meeting.

Launching an attack on Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, who was chairing the meeting and has been at loggerheads with Venugopal, the BJP leader said, "It's the minister's way of humiliating a senior surgeon who has been honoured by Parliament."

The issues raised against Venugopal at today's meeting include outbreak of dengue and anti-reservation protests on the campus.

"If there is an outbreak of dengue in Delhi, it is the minister's fault and he should take the blame," Malhotra said.
