KABUL: A NATO soldier was killed in Afghanistan early on Saturday when a bomb struck a patrol in a volatile southern district and attackers opened fire on troops afterwards, the force said.

The attack was in the Panjwayi district of southern Kandahar province where NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) declared success in a major anti-Taliban operation last month.

"An ISAF soldier was killed following an improvised explosive device strike and small arms fire in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar province in the early hours of this morning," a statement said.

The ambush is similar to others carried out by the extremist Taliban amid a bloody insurgency.

ISAF does not comment on the nationalities of its casualties until the information has been released by the home country.

About 2,300 Canadian soldiers are based in Kandahar and patrol Panjwayi.

ISAF includes about 31,000 troops from 37 countries while a separate international coalition led by the United States is made up of about 8,000 soldiers, most of them Americans.

Nearly 100 foreign soldiers have been killed in hostile action in Afghanistan this year, which has seen a surge in Taliban attacks on defensive positions as well as guerrilla-style suicide and car bombings.

The coalition offensive that eventually toppled the Taliban from government was launched exactly five years ago with aerial strikes on militant positions on October 7, 2001.
