KOLLAM: The programme of implanting electronic identity cards in the form of microchips on captive elephants was inaugurated here on Monday by Kerala Forests Minister Binoy Viswam at the start of the Wildlife Week celebrations in the state.

The programme is part of the state's measures to ensure proper upkeep of the jumbos by owners and mahouts. The minute chip containing all the `personal data' of the elephants would be implanted in the skin behind the left ear of the animal.

Whenever required, the details in the chip could be decoded using an electronic reader. About 800 captive elephants would get the device under the programme.

All available data regarding the elephant will be fed in the chip, which will have a 10-digit code. The data could be decoded by keeping the reader at a distance of 10 centimetres from the implanted chip, forest department sources said.

Elephants having the certification of the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) would be given the ID chip.

The chip will be implanted through a minor procedure by a veterinary surgeon, the sources said.
