NEW DELHI: Twelve fresh polio cases have been reported from the country, including one from Delhi, taking the total to 338 this year.

Out of the fresh cases, 10 are from Uttar Pradesh, which has so far reported 301 polio cases.

"This is an outbreak we are seeing," a Health Ministry official said. The fresh cases were confirmed on Friday.

The official said what was worrying was that those areas which were free from polio last year, are reporting it this year. These areas are Delhi, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chandigarh and West Bengal.

The viral paralytic disease enters the body through the mouth due to contaminated water or food. It infects the intestinal walls and then enters the bloodstream and the central nervous system.

Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss has said earlier that seven to 15 per cent children had missed the immunization programme this year.

He announced that he would visit Uttar Pradesh and would interact with the minority community, who are not taking the vaccine after rumours that it would make their children impotent.

In the November anti-polio drive those areas would be covered that have been affected by the virus.

According to the World Health Organisation, there have been 23 polio-related deaths this year.

Jay Wenger, WHO's project manager for the National Polio Surveillance Project-India, said that there have been 23 deaths, and most of the deaths were from UP as the maximum cases have been reported from there.

He said there was an outbreak, and the cases would go up in a few weeks.
