Karnataka continues to crack down on English schools

BANGALORE: The Karnataka government on Saturday refused to stop its crackdown on 2,111 primary schools that switched the medium of instruction from Kannada to English without permission. The schools, with 2.73 lakh students, had violated permission granted to them by introducing teaching in English.

At the end of three rounds of talks with school managements, officials and Kannada litterateurs, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj Horatti said 1,470 schools with about 1.80 lakh students had been derecognised and action would follow against the rest.

On whether government action would create uncertainty for students in the middle of the academic year, he said those affected would be relocated in nearby schools.
